The Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Capital Region of Denmark has plans to establish a new major diabetes centre in Copenhagen as a result of the foundation’s €375 million grant.
The new “Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen” will serve as a driving force for world-class treatment and clinical research within diabetes. Furthermore, it will act as a specialist clinic focusing on patient needs and coherent treatment and disease prevention for all types of diabetes and its complications.
The centre will have 24-hour coverage and the capacity to treat more than 11,000 people annually.
The new centre will collaborate with hospitals, universities and other public and private sector parties in Denmark as well as abroad to create a leading global environment for the treatment of diabetes and clinical research.
The grant is the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s largest single award to date.
“This is a unique opportunity to establish a world-class diabetes centre in Copenhagen because the Capital Region of Denmark already has high-level research and treatment environments. Further, the size and treatment competence of the new centre means that it will be able to offer people with different types of diabetes coherent treatment of the highest quality,” says Chair of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Sten Scheibye.
The construction of the new centre will be completed by 2020 and the grant will run until 2029. Neither Novo Nordisk A/S nor the Novo Nordisk Foundation will have any commercial interest in the centre or be able to influence the treatment and the clinical research at the centre.
