Umeå takes the lead in Sweden’s 5G development

Umeå 5G

Umeå will be the first 5G test city in Sweden when five public actors collaborate to establish a test environment, which will include the first 5G university hospital and 5G university in Europe.

These efforts will give Umeå the opportunity to be the first city in the country to test and develop new digital products and servives that can benefit both society and the population. During the test period, 2018-2019, Umeå will have access to 200 MHz.

“Umeå 5G may contribute to Sweden taking the lead within 5G and it means that we will be able to achieve EU’s goal that every country should have a 5G ready city by 2020,” says Jonas Wessel, Head of the Spectrum department at The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS).

In the establishment phase Umeå 5G will be financed by resources from the five public actors that runs the effort. In the next step, funds are expected from both national actors and private investors. At first the project aims to build the 5G infrastructure in Umeå, starting with the university and hospital area and at the same time establish an arena for testing, developing and evaluating digital products and services.
