The US administration freezes new National Science Foundation awards
The policy prevents the NSF from awarding new research grants and from supplying allotted funds for existing grants, such as those that receive yearly increments of money.
Staff members at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were told on 30 April to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice,” according to an email seen by Nature.
The changing US regulatory environment: Amid Chaos, Signs of Opportunity
Notwithstanding political ‘hiccups,’ the US will remain the most favored market for Nordic life science companies, say experts.
It was also announced last week that major US universities have filed a lawsuit seeking to block President Trump’s administration from carrying out steep cuts to federal research funding provided to academic institutions by the NSF. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Boston by 13 schools including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University, as well as the Association of American Universities and two other academic trade groups.
They took aim at a NSF decision to cap reimbursement for indirect research costs at 15%, an action that mirrored funding cuts the National Institutes of Health and US Department of Energy attempted that judges have so far blocked, reported Reuters.
