The BioStorage Village
How Birka BioStorage is helping shape a future infrastructure ecosystem for life science.

From above, the scale becomes easier to understand. The expanding facilities outside Lund, Sweden, no longer resemble a traditional storage operation. Roads connect newly developed infrastructure zones, temperature-controlled facilities continue to grow, and logistics flows increasingly resemble the operational footprint of an emerging scientific hub.
“We realized that our customers were no longer only searching for storage capacity,” says Ali Ismail, Founder and Commercial Director, Birka BioStorage. “They were searching for stability, infrastructure and an ecosystem capable of supporting increasingly valuable biological assets over very long periods of time.”

Initially focused on pharmaceutical and biotech projects, the company now supports global organizations operating within diagnostics, medtech, food tech, environmental research and advanced material sciences.
“It happened naturally. Once organizations understand that sensitive biological and research-related materials can be securely managed at scale, new industries begin approaching Birka with similar infrastructure challenges,” says Ismail.
Developing large-scale infrastructure for biological preservation requires proximity to advanced research environments, international life science networks and organizations operating at the frontier of innovation. In that sense, Lund provided a natural foundation.
“Lund was never only a geographic location,” says Ismail. “It was an operational advantage. The concentration of research-intensive organizations in the Medical Valley region created an environment where the need for specialized biological infrastructure became increasingly visible.”
Storage was never the final destination. It was the foundation.
Within Birka BioStorage, the term “The BioStorage Village” has gradually emerged as a way to describe the company’s long-term direction, a future ecosystem where storage, logistics, analysis and scientific support services gradually converge around the growing movement of biological assets in Lund. But the larger shift may now be happening inside the company itself. Birka has started developing new service capabilities connected to analytical workflows surrounding stored material, while future manufacturing-related services are already part of long-term discussions. “Storage was never the final destination. It was the foundation.”
That foundation is becoming increasingly important as research programs grow more international, decentralized and data-driven. Biological samples are now deeply connected to regulatory processes, clinical timelines, intellectual property and future commercial value.
“As therapies become more personalized and research programs more globally distributed, biological infrastructure itself is becoming a strategic component of scientific competitiveness,” says Ismail. “A stored sample may represent ten years of research.
“Sometimes the value inside a freezer cannot even be fully understood at the moment it is archived. That changes how infrastructure must be designed,” he adds.
We believe biological infrastructure will become one of the most strategically important sectors within global life science over the next decade.
The term “The BioStorage Village” reflects Birka’s belief that future life science infrastructure will increasingly be built around integrated ecosystems rather than isolated service providers. The next expansion phase is already being planned for 2028, and according to Ismail, the ambition reaches far beyond Sweden.
“We believe biological infrastructure will become one of the most strategically important sectors within global life science over the next decade,” he says.
Lund already has Medicon Village and Science Village, “why not imagine a future BioStorage Village as part of that ecosystem as well?”
From the ground, Birka BioStorage still looks like a rapidly expanding company. From above, however, something else starts to appear: The early shape of The BioStorage Village.
