The new interdisciplinary center, established by Karolinska Institutet’s (KI’s) Department of Laboratory Medicine, is designed to bring together advanced technologies and expertise to accelerate discoveries in infection biology and their translation into clinical practice. It combines expertise in infection biology, spatial omics, super-resolution microscopy, AI-driven multi-omics integration, and clinical data science on a single platform. For the public, a better understanding of infections could mean better diagnostics and treatment, while research capacity to meet future infectious threats is strengthened.

“The establishment of the center is the culmination of many years of collaborative research and investments through European and Swedish funding programs,” says Ujjwal Neogi, Director of CSIB in a KI News article. “Now CSIB becomes a dedicated interdisciplinary center under one governance structure with a clear mandate for technology development and translation for pandemic preparedness.”

According to Co-Director Iva Filipovic, center status also opens the door to larger, consortium-scale funding calls and makes CSIB a more visible partner for international academic and industry collaborations.

In conjunction with Virology Next

The inauguration will take place in the Jan-Åke Gustafsson Auditorium in the NEO building, in conjunction with Virology Next 2026, which brings international researchers to Flemingsberg to discuss the latest advances in virology and infection biology.

Speakers include Neogi and Filipovic; Matti Sällberg, Campus Vice President KI South; and Sara Heelge Vikmång, Chair of the Municipal Executive Board, Huddinge Municipality. The inauguration will be followed by a keynote lecture from Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, Acting Director of Epidemic and Pandemic Management at the World Health Organization (WHO) and one of the organization’s most prominent experts on COVID-19 and global infectious threats.
