In June, the state-owned company Apotek Produktion & Laboratorier AB (APL) announced that the company had entered into an agreement to acquire an antibiotics factory in Strängnäs from Meribel Pharma Solutions. The deal was completed on August 21, and the facility was officially inaugurated on September 1.

The inauguration was attended by Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, Jakob Forssmed. The Chairman of Strängnäs Municipality, Jacob Högfeldt, and Municipal Manager, Lars Ekström, also participated, along with APL’s management and employees from the Strängnäs facility.

Pharmaceutical supply and preparedness

The Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, Jakob Forssmed, gave a speech in which he underlined the importance of safe access to antibiotics for the Swedish population. He also thanked everyone who contributed to the acquisition and emphasized the crucial importance of the facility’s personnel to the country’s preparedness.

In December last year, Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency concluded that the country’s pharmaceutical stockpiles are insufficient to cope with a crisis or war. That is a serious conclusion. Their report outlines 130 measures to address this, 40 of which are considered to be high priority. But the key question is: how will the stockpiling work in practice?
