Thor Medical to supply alpha isotopes to UK drug discovery center
Oslo-based Thor Medical has signed a three-year agreement to supply radium-224 and lead-212 to Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC), a UK life science service for drug discovery. The isotopes will support MDC’s work to speed up the development of radiopharmaceutical cancer therapies in the UK.
The isotopes will come from Thor Medical’s industrial-scale AlphaOne facility at Herøya Industrial Park, and the first shipments to MDC have already been made. Thor Medical produces alpha-emitting isotopes from naturally occurring thorium, a process that requires neither irradiation nor nuclear reactors.
Alongside its isotope supply, MDC co-leads a GBP 18.8 million consortium with the United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory to build a UK supply chain for lead-212. The consortium is partly funded by Innovate UK.
“Since opening AlphaOne, we are seeing increasing interest in securing predictable and stable isotope supply, which is an important enabler for preclinical development,” says Jasper C. Kurth, CEO of Thor Medical.
