The Swedish Research Council has granted Uppsala University SEK 145 million to recruit Elisabetta Dejana, an internationally wellknown professor within vascular biology.

Elisabetta Dejana is a worldleading and highly quoted researcher and is currently Professor of General Pathology at the Department of Biosciences, University of Milan. With the recruit, Uppsala University hopes to strengthen its existing competence in the area and create a program to bring laboratory research to clinical implementation.

“This is a real top recruitment to an already internationally leading research area at Uppsala University. This will inspire our researchers and students and raise the research environment’s international attractiveness further,” says Eva Åkesson, headmaster at the university.

Dejana’s research is focused on endothelial cells, the cells that constitute the inner surface of the blood vessels, and she has through her findings mapped how these cells are connected to one another. At Uppsala University, Elisabetta Dejana will start a translational research program where research results from the laboratory will be developed into new therapies for people with arterial diseases in the brain.
