AstraZeneca opens USD 1 billion R&D center in Kendall Square
AstraZeneca has opened its newest global strategic R&D center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is part of a USD 1 billion investment that will grow the company’s workforce in the state by more than 50%.
Together with its genomic medicine site at 100 Binney Street, The AstraZeneca R&D Center Kendall Square will be home to nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists. They will work to accelerate the company’s pipeline in oncology, cell therapy, chronic disease, and rare disease.
The 18-story, roughly 53,000m² building includes ten floors of interconnected laboratories that use robotics, continuous automation, and agentic AI. Teams at the site will develop treatments for conditions such as COPD, obesity and metabolic disease, breast cancer, and rare diseases. They will also focus on next-wave areas such as cell therapy and biologics, which are intended to drive AstraZeneca’s growth beyond 2030.
“Kendall Square is a leading innovation ecosystem, and it is one of the key locations where AstraZeneca will discover the next generation of scientific breakthroughs. Our new R&D centre not only reflects AstraZeneca’s long-term commitment to Massachusetts but also our belief in delivering US-led innovation to patients around the world,” says Pascal Soriot, CEO, AstraZeneca.
The Massachusetts investment is part of AstraZeneca’s broader USD 50 billion commitment to the US. The company has had a presence in the state for more than 75 years.
“We’re excited to see the future of medicine take shape in Kendall Square, and we’re grateful to AstraZeneca for continuing to grow its presence in our state,” says Maura Healey, Governor of Massachusetts.
The new site adds to AstraZeneca’s R&D presence in more than 40 countries. That presence includes its other US strategic research center in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and, closer to home, its strategic R&D center in Gothenburg, Sweden. AstraZeneca employs more than 25,000 people in the US.
