Europe: Digital Medicines Information gains momentum
Europe is moving towards a digital future for medicines information, a new report from AESGP, EFPIA and Medicines for Europe shows.
The report, publsihed on February 9, provides a comprehensive overview of electronic Product Information (ePI) pilot projects across 31 countries. It finds that 14 are already running pilots, seven are in the planning phase and ten have yet to start, often due to legal, technical or resource barriers.
The report highlights for example a Nordic pilot (Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland) that uses English‑only outer packaging with ePI available in local languages (aiming to simplify logistics and improve access), as well as long‑running hospital‑focused pilots in Belgium and Luxembourg where 97% of hospital pharmacists report no inconvenience from the absence of paper leaflets. In Portugal, one year in, most healthcare professionals praised ePI, with easy access and minimal need for paper copies, and in the Baltics, the countries report positive feedback from pharmacists and growing support for ePI.
The authors conclude that ePI can be successfully integrated into healthcare systems and call for continued collaboration and knowledge‑sharing to overcome remaining regulatory and technical hurdles and to ensure an inclusive transition that supports patient safety, logistics and environmental sustainability.
