FDA approves Xbrane’s Lucentis biosimilar
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Xbrane Biopharma’s Lucamzi (ranibizumab-blrz) as a biosimilar to Lucentis. The approval gives US patients a lower-cost option for treating wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other serious eye conditions.
The Solna-based company is now working with its partners to finalize preparations for a US launch during 2027.
The approval is based on a comparative analysis of Lucamzi’s structure and function, together with a Phase III study in 582 patients with wet AMD. The study showed equivalent efficacy and comparable safety to the reference product.
“FDA approval of Lucamzi is a landmark event for Xbrane, representing a key opportunity to reach many more patients and to realize a return on our development investments,” says Martin Åmark, CEO, Xbrane Biopharma.
Ranibizumab is an anti-VEGF drug used to treat retinal vascular disorders, a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Around twenty million people in the US are living with AMD. Globally, anti-VEGF treatments for retinal disorders make up a market of about EUR 9 billion in annual net sales, with roughly ten million injections a year.
