The report, requested by NordForsk, is titled Nordic research infrastructure collaboration – Recommendations for common Nordic activities.

The report has been conducted by Professor Sven Stafström from the University of Linköping and former leader of the Swedish Research Council. In the report he investigates research infrastructure activities in the Nordic countries and presents measures that can be taken to strengthen research infrastructure cooperation at the Nordic level.

Recommendations for both NordForsk and NORDHORCS

The measures are summed in a set of recommendations for both NordForsk and NORDHORCS which should lead to new initiatives both by NordForsk and NORDHORCS.

Among other things, Stafström recommends that NordForsk increases the support to networking activities and support to joint Nordic research infrastructure user communities. Among the recommendations to NORDHORCS, Stafström suggests that its member organisations allocate a budget for co-financing of NordForsk research infrastructure calls aimed at strengthening Nordic collaboration.

“Investments in new research infrastructure and costs associated with operation and maintenance of existing infrastructure are challenging for all the national research funding organizations in the Nordics. Increased cooperation across the Nordic region can be a way of dealing with these challenges, and NordForsk can facilitate the cooperation. Professor Stafström’s report will help the national research funding organizations and NordForsk to prioritize and facilitate effective Nordic research infrastructure cooperation in the future,” says NordForsk director Arne Flåøyen.
