Uppsala was selected for its long-standing expertise in chromatography and bioprocessing, as well as its close network of pharmaceutical companies, universities, research organisations and biotechnology startups, the company states.

The Grand Opening

The Grand Opening brought together customers, partners, researchers, industry experts and local representatives for a full day of scientific discussion, facility tours and celebration. The event also marked Sunresin’s 25th anniversary, connecting the company’s history with the opening of a new chapter in Europe it states.

“Our ambition for the Uppsala site is to support both resin development and process development for the pharmaceutical industry, while creating opportunities to work closely with academia, research institutes and biotechnology companies,” says Hans Johansson, General Manager of Sunresin Sweden. “Uppsala gives us the scientific environment and experience needed to build those collaborations.”

The scientific program

The scientific program focused on several areas shaping the future of bioprocessing. Jonathan Royce discussed how the growing diversity of molecular structures is changing protein purification. Mats Lundgren presented developments in mucosal vaccines and the potential advantages of cold-chain-free solutions. Tiago Matos explored the transition from reactive to predictive pharmaceutical manufacturing, while Cecilia Lindskog presented the Human Protein Atlas and its relevance to biomarker research, drug development and human biology.

The program also included presentations from Sunresin management, guided tours of the new laboratories and application areas, and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from Uppsala and international guests.

New international life sciences companies in Uppsala

Per Lundequist, Head of Unit for Business and Tourism Development at Uppsala Municipality, welcomed Sunresin to the city during the opening ceremony. In his remarks, he highlighted the value of new international Life Sciences companies establishing operations in Uppsala and the positive contribution they make to the local business and innovation ecosystem. He also noted the importance of Uppsala Business Park as a location where companies can grow, collaborate and become part of the wider regional community.

“The opening of our first European site brings Sunresin closer to customers and partners across the region,” said Xiaokang Kou, CEO of Sunresin. “It creates a local platform for technical collaboration while connecting Sunresin’s global manufacturing capabilities with the scientific expertise already present in Uppsala.”

The day concluded with a gala dinner celebrating both the opening of Sunresin Sweden and the company’s 25th anniversary.
