Gubra receives USD 50 million milestone payment from AbbVie
The Danish biotech has triggered a milestone payment from AbbVie after the pharma giant advanced ABBV-295, a long-acting amylin analog for chronic weight management, into a Phase 2 clinical trial – the latest payout under the pair’s 2025 obesity licensing deal.
“The advancement of ABBV-295 into Phase 2 marks an important milestone for Gubra,” highlighting the programme’s potential as part of the next generation of chronic weight management therapies,” says Markus Rohrwild, CEO, Gubra.
ABBV-295
ABBV-295 was discovered using Gubra’s streaMLine platform and represents a mechanistically distinct approach to weight management compared with GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists.
In Phase 1 multiple-ascending-dose testing, the compound produced dose-dependent weight reduction of up to 9.8 percent after 12 weeks of weekly dosing, with a favourable safety profile across all dose levels tested. The new Phase 2 study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-finding trial enrolling approximately 360 adults with a BMI of 27–30 kg/m² or higher, running for 52 weeks with percentage body weight change at week 32 as its primary endpoint.
The licensing agreement
The milestone is one instalment of a licensing agreement, struck with AbbVie in March 2025, that could bring Gubra up to USD 1.875 billion in development, commercial and sales-based milestones, plus tiered royalties on global net sales.
