Glycorex moves into universal blood products
Glycorex Transplantation is broadening its strategy to develop standardized, universal blood products for civilian healthcare, emergency preparedness, and military medicine. The work will be carried out through its new subsidiary, Glycorex Universal Blood Products (UBP).
Today’s blood supply chains face significant logistical challenges, including limited access to universal AB plasma. Recent studies from NHS Blood and Transplant in the UK point to strong interest among hospitals in universal blood components that can improve patient safety, simplify logistics, and reduce waste.
The Lund-based company will build on its established, CE-marked Glycosorb technology, which removes blood group antibodies. Glycorex now aims to move from supplying that technology to developing scalable production and delivery of ready-to-use universal plasma products with consistently low anti-A/B antibody titers. This could considerably simplify blood supply logistics, particularly in prehospital emergency care and military medicine.
“By broadening our strategy, we are taking a natural and clear step to apply our established adsorption technology to one of healthcare’s most critical logistical challenges. With more than twenty-five years of clinical experience in selectively removing blood group antibodies in ABO-incompatible transplantation, combined with recent results from our collaborations with civilian and military institutions in transfusion medicine, we have a strong foundation for developing universal blood products,” says Carl-Magnus Schultz, CEO of Glycorex. “Our ambition is to build a new commercial platform that addresses key needs in civilian healthcare and military preparedness, while creating significant long-term growth opportunities for Glycorex.”
The initiative will initially focus on process development, scientific and clinical validation, and regulatory requirements. This work will be done together with leading Nordic experts in transfusion medicine, with the goal of establishing a commercially scalable platform for universal blood products.
