The stockpile is managed by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, a WHO-hosted mechanism that coordinates the allocation and deployment of emergency vaccine supplies to countries responding to outbreaks. Initial funding has been provided by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The value of the supply contract was not disclosed.

MVA-BN is marketed as JYNNEOS in the US, IMVAMUNE in Canada and IMVANEX in the EU and UK. It received WHO prequalification for people aged 12 and older in 2024, and the European Commission has since extended its EU approval to children aged 2 to under 12. During the 2022–2024 mpox outbreaks, Bavarian Nordic supplied the vaccine to more than 70 countries.

Hitesh Sahni, Senior Vice President, Public Preparedness at Bavarian Nordic, said: “The establishment of a global mpox vaccine emergency stockpile is an important milestone in strengthening preparedness for future outbreaks. Ensuring timely and equitable access to vaccines is critical to protecting populations and enabling an effective public health response.”
