Back to work: 10 tips for a smooth transition
Returning to work after a long, relaxing vacation can be challenging. Here are some tips to make the transition easier and less stressful.
1. Take time to readjust before returning
Most people focus on preparing for their departure, maximizing their time away, and returning home just one day before work begins. Instead, consider returning one or two days before you go back to work. This will give you time to settle in, perhaps catch up on emails, and prepare for the days ahead. It can make your first day back at the office feel much less overwhelming.
2. Build in transition time
If possible, avoid scheduling meetings during your first few days back. Give yourself time to review what has happened in your absence, organize your workload, and ease back into your routine.
3. Prioritize your tasks
Create a list of priorities that need to be completed during your first few days back. When you are struggling to focus and do not know where to start, a list can help you stay on track and accomplish the essentials. Be sure to prioritize your tasks.
4. Keep your vacation spirit alive
Take a walk in a nearby park – barefoot, if appropriate – during your lunch break, or eat outside with your coworkers. You could also plan a barbecue or meet a friend for ice cream after work. Small activities like these can help you maintain some of the relaxation you enjoyed while away.
5. Use music to boost your focus
Music can help combat the sluggishness you may feel on your first day back at work. Choose something that keeps you awake without distracting you, while still allowing you to concentrate on your tasks. Music has been found to reduce anxiety and stress, provide comfort, and enhance positive emotions. The right tones may also shift or reinforce our mood and mindset.
6. Take the first step
Returning to work can feel a bit like going to the gym: the hardest part is getting started. Take the first step, begin with a manageable task, and let your momentum build.
